We have Bob & Taimna working full time on the farm with Duncan. Rupert (Duncan & Annabel’s son) helps out when he’s home from school. Each week they help select the best beef and lamb that will go off to the abattoir and then on into the butchery to be sold to the customers.
Helen in the shop has been with us since February 2018 and is an expert in running the front of the house crew, along with Viv, Lynne, Shannon & Tabatha (Duncan and Annabel’s daughter) when she is home from school. Jan & Connor together, run the Waipawa Butchery Kitchen & Catering making our Heat n Eat Ready Meals and keeping an eye on Annabel who runs all the day-to-day operations for the Butchery.
Our expert butchers Rhys, Hawaiki and Mike can be seen daily breaking down full carcass beef, lamb, pork and chickens. All the trim from these animals goes into our sausages and many small goods. Rory and Kaito share the after school cleaning and Saturdays production roles.
Duncan Smith is the Patangata Station owner/farmer and the owner of the Waipawa Butchery. He loves farming but also enjoys people, so you will find Duncan behind the Butchery counter two afternoons a week, most probably sampling new products and making suggestions for what meat is best to buy for your optimum enjoyment.
Annabel Tapley-Smith, married to Duncan, is owner of the business and a big part of the inspiration to connect their farming enterprise to an exclusive local retail market. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in marketing, sales, human resources, event management and sponsorship and is the person to contact for all enquires in these areas. Happy staff, happy lamb chops!
Family is important to Duncan and Annabel, they are supported by numerous family and friends who offer encouragement, guidance and positivity for their new ventures.
The Smith’s have been in Central Hawke’s Bay since before WWII and began shopping at the Waipawa shop the year it opened, in 1948.
